Hi Jamie, we have had abysmal luck in the last two years since our first try. The primary problem was potato blight... so we didn't really have a chance to test the tweaks we were making to our system nor different varieties because the blight killed the potato plants long before they started to mature.

One of the interns at the pilot study farm said that he saw (with his own eyes) a man in Iowa have success with a potato tower model though. He attached tall chicken wire "baskets" to his fence posts and in relatively thin layers, alternated the potato sets with a growing medium, all at once (meaning he didn't wait until the potatoes grew before starting a new layer). Unfortunately I can't remember if he said he used straw, soil or mulch as the growing medium. Anyway, the potato plants grow out the sides of the basket so it looks like a big bush.

I don't know, I didn't see it myself, but it sounds plausible. Good luck! And keep us posted.

Currently researching this myself. I noticed you added soil, and not mulch, like I've seen... this might help aerate more.

But I'm curious if you've tried other potatoes. For example, I've been told some like yukon gold will only layer once? I don't know. Hoping you've learned something the past year or two.
